What We Like
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has a number of features we like. Our favorite is the photo-enabled claim form, which makes filing a claim fast and super easy. Other pros include:
- Fast claims processing. As mentioned above, Healthy Paws offers the capability of submitting a picture of your veterinarian bill as your claim form. After that, claims are typically processed within 10 days.
- No maximum annual limit. Healthy Paws does not cap the amount of money that’s reimbursed to you within a policy year.
- Customizable insurance plans. Choose your reimbursement rate, as well as your deductible in order to customize your insurance plan to fit your budget.
- Direct pay is available. For veterinarians who accept, the option for Healthy Paws to pay your vet directly is available.
- Donates to nonprofit pet organizations. The Healthy Paws Foundation has given nearly a million dollars to deserving nonprofit organizations.
What We Don’t Like
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance does not offer additional coverage for things like routine vet care or dental health. And like most, the company does not cover preexisting conditions. Other features we have to list as cons include:
- Limited coverage. As stated above, this insurance plan does not offer any optional additions to expand your coverage beyond the basic accident and illness coverage.
- Waiting period. The waiting period is more than two weeks from the policy’s effective date.
- Age limitations. Healthy Paws insurance accepts pets from 8 weeks up to 14 years old. Other age limitations include reserving the 90 percent reimbursement rate and low deductible for pets as young as 1 and 2 years old.
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance features the basic coverage for unexpected vet trips. For dogs and cats, this insurance plan covers a range of accidents, illnesses, and injuries. It does not offer additional coverage beyond that.
What Is Covered

How Much Does Healthy Paws Cost?
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance varies in cost depending on your customizable plan. But insurance plans start at around $15 per month for cats and $20 per month for dogs. Deductibles and reimbursement rates work together to create your monthly premium. A low premium is the result of a low reimbursement with a high deductible. A higher premium is due to a high reimbursement with a low deductible.
For example, it would cost roughly $33 to $43 per month to cover a female dog who is 5 years old and weighs 50 pounds. Choosing from either a 70 or 80 percent reimbursement rate and either a $250 or $500 deductible will create your exact monthly premium. For a male dog who is 5 years old and weighs 60 pounds or more, it would cost roughly $42 to $55 per month. For cats, Healthy Paws costs about $14 to $18 per month.

Previous customers often make the best go-to source for the real scoop on a product or service. After searching through some online reviews, we dug out helpful positive and negative reviews for you to help you on your pet insurance quest.
The majority of reviews for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance are positive. Customers applaud the easy processing, fast reimbursement, and coverage of problems.
“Recently one or our French Bulldogs had emergency back surgery. It was extremely expensive and Healthy Paws covered everything they said they would. We received our reimbursement check for our claim within a week. We had a similar incident with our other French Bulldog where she needed an expensive cardiac procedure and again, Healthy Paws came through with flying colors. These two procedures would have been an extreme financial burden on our family without the help of Healthy Paws.”– Mary, PetInsuranceReview.com, 6/29/2020
“We got Healthy Paws for our Husky/Alaskan Malamute mix when he was six years old and we could not be happier. Blue has had a few health problems including seizures and now, at age 12, cancer. Healthy Paws has covered all the medical expenses after our deductible. There has never been a delay with payment. Highly recommend Healthy Paws and will be a customer for life with all my pets.” – Liz, PetInsuranceReview.com, 4/7/2020
The majority of negative reviews refer to rising premiums over the life of their pets or the rise of costs after filing a claim. Others noted the reason of “preexisting condition” as a frequent claim denial.
“Healthy paws will continue to raise your rates over the life of your pet until it is almost unaffordable. They don’t raise it in the first couple years but by the time your pet gets older and it would be hard to switch companies especially if there are any underlying health issues the rates start to increase substantially. I have been a customer for almost 10 years. My monthly premium started out at $39 a month, now I am paying $130 and my deductible doubled without them notifying me. They do make it easy to submit a claim, but more often then not when I have submitted a claim, I have had to call customer service to sort things out because they didn’t pay me what I was entitled or they needed more medical records. This company seems good at first but don’t be fooled, they will get you in the end.” – Douglas, Yelp, 7/6/2020
“Don’t use them. They fight you on everything, don’t include any explanation and try to short change you at every turn. I signed up for $52/month, $250 deductible, 80% reimbursement policy. I thought it was pretty expensive but if she has to go to the pet hospital I thought it would be worth it. Three weeks after my insurance started, my puppy started pooping blood so we took her to the ER. Between the intro exam, that visit, and the follow up, I spent $835. They reimbursed (against deductible mind you) $114. They provided no notification of this, but when I dug into the claims and then called, they said the ER visit was due to “pre-existing” conditions. I canceled my service and I recommend you don’t sign up with them. Not worth it.” – John, Yelp, 5/1/2020
The Final Verdict
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is a solid insurance option for accidents and injuries. It may not be for you if you’re looking for more comprehensive insurance coverage, however. But customers feel the basic coverage is adequate for those large, unexpected vet bills. Others warn of increasing rates year after year. Overall, this pet insurance could give you more peace of mind when caring for your pet.
